SHOOTING IDEAS IN THE POST

One of my dearest friends in the coaching business is Jim Boone who is currently the head men's basketball coach at Tusculum University in Tennessee. Jim and I grew up together in Winfield, West Virginia and learned much of what we know from Allen Osborne, the boys coach at Poca High School. Jim is a detailed teacher of fundamentals and today I'm going to share some of his thoughts on post play and shooting.

1. We have four rules for scoring in the post. A) Get a piece of the paint, and if you have at least one foot in the paint, no dribble. B) Shoot the ball closer to the basket than where you received the ball. C) Upon receiving the ball outside of the lane, you are allowed one power dribble. D) Use the glass on all shots unless dunking.

2. Have a go to move and a counter move.

3. You must have a move to the middle.

4. You must post high enough to use the glass on your baseline moves.

5. A good post player garners the respect of his opponent by forcing them to double team.

6. Post play is based on location, location, location.

7. Great post players are excellent free throw shooters. One third of your points as a post player should come from the foul line.
